Character breakdown
-
Paul Cuffe (Younger)
16+ to play 9-12 years old; Black and/or Native American; boy. He is self-determined and smart - he’s pretty sure he’s smarter than everyone else and he is very sure that all people should be treated equally. His father, a former slave, practices Quakerism and his mother is Wampanoag. He is raised in the Native community and has very little exposure to White people beyond his friend Will Jr. He respects his parents and older siblings. Very caring, warm and loving. LEAD.
-
Paul Cuffe (Older)
18 years old; Black and/or Native American; man. A large presence, charismatic, clever, funny at times and always the smartest in the room, even when he appears not to be. He’s cocksure and hellbent on adventure. He has a life plan - to become a Captain of whaling vessels, build a fleet captained and crewed by Black and Native men and become wealthy. He carries heartache from his father’s death and from his best friend, Alice, marrying another. His family is his true north - everything he does is for them. Paul enjoys helping others, he truly believes that all people are equal. Paul lives in a world in which the foundations of White patriarchy is being laid - he does not fear it, he uses his intelligence to fight against it. LEAD
-
David Sproat
Early forties; Scottish; Scottish Accent; man. Sproat is the Commissary - the man in charge - of a decrepit, hell-like prison ship during the Revolutionary War. He has a mercurial temper - laughter easily turns into violent outbursts. The more men he enlists from the prison ship to help the Royal Navy, the more money he makes and the faster the war will be over and he gets to go home. SUPPORTING
-
Diallo
Twenties; African; man. A run-away slave who wants to get home to Africa - nothing will stand in his way though he does crave the company of others. He was stolen from his home as a boy and taken to Virginia where he had a cruel master. He slit that guy's throat and hasn’t looked back. Hard shell, soft center. SUPPORTING
-
Elias
16+ to play 12 years old; White; boy. Brave, family-oriented, tough-as-nails. Elias, a cabin boy on whaling ships, knows that he has to take some hard knocks but he’s young, he misses home and men on ships are cruel. SUPPORTING
-
Alice
16+ to play 11 years old; Native American; girl. Smart, vibrant and very devoted to her family/tribe. Alice loves to create things - whether it’s a garden, music or art. She enjoys attention or putting on a little show now and again. She has an artist's soul and is smart like a whip. She is Paul’s best friend. SUPPORTING
-
Will Jr.
16+ to play 9-12 years old; White; boy. Goofy, devoted to God and his friends, wealthy Quaker boy. Paul is his best friend. Will Jr often says the wrong thing but it’s always coming from the right place. SUPPORTING
-
Kofi
Late forties; African; man. Kofi is Paul’s father. He was captured in Africa at ten and sold to a Quaker family in Rhode Island so he was raised Quaker and believes in Quaker ideology (non-violence and equality). He purchased his freedom in his late 20’s and had ten children with Ruth, Paul’s mother. SUPPORTING
-
Ruth
Late 30's; Native American/Wampanoag; woman. Ruth was born and raised among her matriarchal tribe on Martha’s Vineyard. She has little interaction with people outside of the tribes in the area and doesn’t particularly trust outsiders. She is a sachem - a teacher - and she is a powerful force in her family and tribe. SUPPORTING
-
James Pequot
Late Teens; Native American; male. Strong, proud and duty-bound. James has seen much of the world’s cruelty and wants to protect himself and his people. SUPPORTING
-
Mary
16+ to play teen; Native American/Black; female. Mary is Paul’s sister and they are very close. She has a giant crush on Michael Wainer, who may or may not know she exists. Mary is a very, warm and caring person - she doesn’t like to see people hurt.
-
Michael Wainer
Late Teens; Native American; male. Michael is pragmatic and likes to help others. He sees that Paul is smarter than other kids and he’s always happy to help Paul out (plus then maybe he’ll get to spend more time with Mary).
-
His Majesty the Chief
20’s-30’s; Black; male. HMC is a big man with a cruel streak. He is a former slave. He has no loyalties to anyone but himself.
-
Simons
Twenties; White English; British Accent; man. Sproat’s right hand man. He prefers to use violence when he can but understands that he can’t all the time. SUPPORTING
-
Dame Grant
Indeterminate age; White; woman. An austere Quaker with a secret. SUPPORTING

Overview
The company specializes in short dramatizations of the work of James Joyce and other Irish writers, playwrights and poets. As we grow and add more full length modern plays (with an Irish interest) to our repertoire, we are seeking actors and musicians (instrumental and voice) with an interest in literature, Irish culture or just performing something unique, who can become part of our on-call company for performances over the coming year. We pay for all performances. Actors and musicians of all abilities, ages, ethnicities, genders, races, and sexual orientations are welcome to audition, Union and non-Union. An interest in Irish culture, literature and theatre is an advantage but not required.
